Overview

The Vocational Development program is designed to enhance learning opportunities, for all of general practice.

GPNW provides vocational support through provision of high-quality professional development opportunities for GPs, GP Registrars, Practice Managers, Practice Nurses, Practice Staff, Medical Students and Allied Health Professionals.

GPNW has a 'whole of general practice' view in regards to education and training, providing all staff employed within general practice with opportunities to increase their knowledge and skills.

One of the aims of the program is to support GPs in reaching the goal of 130 RACGP CPD points per triennium and to provide a wide range of educational opportunities in a range of formats and venues. The program includes a variety of delivery methods, including: teleconferencing, breakfast meetings, small group activities, evening and weekend events. All Program Officers facilitate education events within their programs.

The majority of events are program related, however we also work collaboratively with pharmaceutical companies and non-government organisations to provide a number of generic events. There is a Vocational Training Advisory Group that includes two GPs, a Practice Nurse and two Program Officers to provide guidance to the development of the program.
Limited financial assistance is available for remote GPs to attend non GPNW education and training events.

Wherever possible multidisciplinary education is provided inclusive of practice nurses and allied health.

Details of upcoming events can be found under events section on this website.

Please refer to the Practice Support section on this website for information on Medicare Item Number training, support and resources.

Please refer to the Practice Manager Network section on this website for details on education and training for practice staff.

Annual Weekend Education Event (WEE)

GPNW provides regional GPs, GP Registrars, IMGs and a limited number of Medical Students from the Rural Clinical School with a high quality weekend education event.  The topic(s) for the event are selected from the GP’s needs assessment and/or education activity evaluations. The weekend education event is marketed as a family event with wives and children strongly encouraged to attend the event; childcare is provided.    In some instances the invitation has been extended to Practice Nurses and Practice Managers; however this largely depends on the relevance of the topic(s) to these groups.
