The New GP Support Program is designed to provide support to new GPs, IMGs and their families when they relocate to the area; on-going support is available as required. The program is also accessible to new GP Registrars in the region.
The Program Officer designs an individualised orientation schedule; the content depends on the needs of the GP, IMG or GP Registrar.
The Program Officer organises visits to a number of health and community services in the region. In addition they are provided with a comprehensive resource pack which includes information relevant to general practice, as well as information on the local region and professional and personal organisations and services.
The ‘GPNW IMG Orientation’ is now a recognised RACGP Category One Activity; attracting 40 points. IMGs have the choice of whether they complete the category one activity, it simply means they are required to complete the predisposing and reinforcing activities. If they decide against it, it does not alter the level of service/support we provide.
When possible new IMGs are introduced to other families from similar backgrounds and cultures; thus assisting them to form new relationships that may assist them during their settlement process.
